I've had lots of birds (I'm a breeder), but I just got a Timneh -- about
 four months old now.  I'd love to hear what others think about the
 differences between Timnehs and Congos (besides the obvious size &
 color)!  My Timneh is named Shasta after Mount Shasta, which native
 Americans believed to be a sacred, magical place!

Enjoyed your site.  Currently, we have a male cockatiel named Bailey; a
 Boxer, named Crystal; an Iguana named Alex,; and two hermit crabs
 (currently un-named!)  Up until a year ago, I was in the  Boxer
 breeding business (until my Crystal got too old.)  Now I may look into
 breeding and raising Cockatiels.  They are a lot of fun!

I am a 16 yr old student and I currently own a 4 year old black & white
 rabbit named Collar, 13 fish and 1 frog in a aqarium, and last but not
 least my new pet cockatiel named Phoenix I got him when he was 5 months
 and I almost had him for a month so I guess that would make him six
 months old.

Hi, my daughter has a pet crow, Eric.  He was a fledgling that had been
 attacked by a hawk and was dropped..he couldn't fly for quite some time
 and  became "imprinted"..she has had him for a little over a year, and
 he lives  outside in a large cage that she built for him..he loves her
 to pieces and  says "Hello", quite clearly..the neighbors hear him all
 of the time..He will not   not be able to be let go because he thinks
 he's one of us...

I loved the story of you pet tiel.  Arent you glad you finally decided
 to get  one.  They are the greatest and have so much personality.  I
 have a white  face male and cinamin pearl hen.  They just had their
 first clutch, they are  two and a half weeks old and I am anxious to
 see what they will be.  I often  visit the National Cockatiel Society
 site and you can learn so much from that  site, they have a message

I have 3 parrots-double yellowheaded Amazon, Senagal and African Grey.
 Sammy the Senegal was my first bird & he thinks the other birds & 2
 cats ought to get lost!  I am always amazed when I see pictures of
 parrots sitting together on play yards, etc.  Sammy tries to kill
 Doodle & Magoo.  He is a little devil but I still love him.

If it weren't for my pychology of learning project, I never would have
 known this website.  I feel so happy knowing there are a lot of people
 who gives attention to pets.  I'm a pet lover myself. I have a lot of
 pets at home and I have an African Gray whom i taught how to shoot some
 hoops and his name is Gray.  I know there are a lot who's better than
 Gray but I'm proud of him that is why I wanted to share this experience
 of mine.

We loved your page!  Tootoo (our beloved African Grey Congo) is only
 five months old, but he's already  the most spoiled member of our
 family.  We absolutely love him, and can't wait   for him to start
 talking, like we've heard Tomi do.

We are so thrilled to be able to communicate with friends who love our
 fine feathered friends as much as we do.  After raising 8 human

Hello there.... Thoroughly enjoyed reading about your birds.Especially
 the african grey. At present I have one little budgie but I'm saving my
 money to purchase a Congo African grey. Just got over a nightmare stint
 with an agressive 10 year old blue fronted amazon. Tried for 4 months
 but he hated my guts and tried every opportunity to bite me and he
 meant business. Decided that he would never be pet quality and sold him
 to a bird breeder. Now he's living the good life and he's housed with 2

I have a 14mo old Congo Grey, her name is Rover, although I sometimes
 call her   banana beak.She refers to herself as Rover. She replaces
 words that I teach her  with her own preferences, for example I say
 "Rovers a beautiful bird" she says   "Rover's a who bird."I say "I'm a
 cool bird,rock-n-roll" she says "I'm a rock-n  roll bird" If I ask her
 "Rover whats a dog say?" she barks,she also quacks when  asked about a
 duck. Sometimes she will mix these up and quack when asked about a  dog
 and vice versa,but then she laughs and says I'm a bad bad bird.

My cockatiel was named Sammy.  I had her 7 years and we bonded like best
 friends.  She became egg bound and I found her dead.  Everytime I would
 touch her she would lay an egg.  The vet wasn't much help and I blame
 him for not giving her more help.  I can't being myself to get another
 one because we were so close.

We had a Timneh African Grey for over 13 years, and he just died
 tragically  on October 21. I couldn't get him to ANY vet, even UC
 Davis, the night of the  20th when his symptoms became severe. We,
 especially me, are still greiving   quite a bit. We have a Mealy Amazon
 that we have had also for over 13 years-  we got him a few months
 before Timba, our African Grey. I just felt the need   to seek out
 other Grey owners to communicate with after what happened. There  is a

I've noticed that on the internet people can now tell their personal
 stories  to everyone.  I'm a poet and video artist with 11 birds and
 find this amazing  - it's a new form of self-publishing and oral
 history.  I don't own a computer  myself but can access the internet
 where I produce a TV series and I feel so   much more connected to the
 world this way!  As a child I had pen pals all over  the world.  Now
 I'm able to exchange information about the birds and get a feel  for
 people's personal lives, like yours, via our bird-nurturing common

I have a congo of my own and enjoyed the Q&A's!!!  I have only had her
 about 9 months so it was cool to be able to find out things I have been
 wondering

enjoyed reading about your birds. i have a gray and a quaker. i wish i
 had more time i would get more birds. i am afraid to let the quaker and
 the gray get to close to each other for fear that someone will get
 hurt. do you think this is an unfounded fear? i have had both for about
 1.5 years. they are caged in the smeme room. i would like for them to

What a cool site!  I really enjoyed the audio files.  I'm hoping to be a
 Grey  mom sometime in the near future although I don't know if it will
 be a CAG or a   TAG.  I currently have two cats, Panthera and Kali, and
 a 7 month old, 90 pound   Chessie (Chesapeake Bay Retriever), Lando.

I have a Timneh Gray and she is the sweetest bird ever.  She is 10
 monthes old and she is really trying to talk. She is so cute! We love
 her to death. We also have a Quacker and she climbs on his cage and
 lets him know she's boss.

This is a wonderful site.  Came back today to visit after viewing last
 week.  AGs are so funny and so intelligent.  Can't wait to get one in a
 couple months.  I have already bought some wood, leather, clapper
 bells,  heavy duty plastic pieces, etc. to make a couple homemade toys
 for Christmas,  for the bird that is a glimmer in my eye. Also bought
 several books on  parrots and am reading up on proper care, habits,
 feeding, etc.

I like birds alot it's just that my parents won't let me have any.    So
 I have a fish instead.  About 30-40 fish.  3 tanks(5, 10, and 29 gallon
 tanks).

WE LOST OUR AFRICAN GREY TIMNEY PARROT ON JULY 7 1998. HE WAS 11 YEARS
 OLD AND HE DIED FROM CANCER. THE VET SAID THEY NEVER SAW IT BEFORE. WE
 MISS HIM. THANK YOU SHARING TIMMY WITH US. OUR BIRDS NAME WAS COCO.

My favorite relative line is that "We live in a disposable society, that
 is why we have so many unwanted pets dying everyday!"  I believe this
 to be incredibly true not only for dogs and cats, but for birds as
 well.  People do not think of responsibility and tiime demands before
 they plunge into having a pet.  In the end, their recklessness is paid
 for by that innocent creature.

 for me to sing to her. I make up songs about her using her name quite

I am a bird lover myself and have a cockitiel named R.C.  I have had him
 for a year and he can say over 10 words.  He can whistle "Twinkle,
 Twinkle Little Star" and "Jingle Bells".  His favorite word is "Hello
 Birdie, Birdie".  Also I have allergies and he has picked up on my
 sneezing.  He goes achoo whenever he sees me.

I HAVE A CONGO NAMED HECTOR.  I PURCHASED HER IN FL 21 YRS AGO, HER
 VOCABULARY IS UNBELIEVABLE!!! HER ABILITY TO MIMIC IS UNCANNY.  SHE
 CALLS KITTY-KITTY AND THEN STARTS BARKING AT THE CATS.  MY DAUGHTER IS
 ALWAYS GETTING CAUGHT IN THE  MIDDLE OF HECTORS ANTICS.  I WILL CALL TO
 HER OR TELL HER SOMETHING FROM THE  OTHER END OF THE HOUSE AND HECTOR
 WILL ANSWER FOR HER.  I CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN THEIR VOICES.  I
 ALSO HAVE 2 COCKATIELS AND A BUDGIE.  I AM SO  HAPPY TO FIND ALL OF YOU
 BIRD LOVERS AND YOUR COMMENTS.

 science fair   project on it for school.

Enjoyed your story about Pea Chan, very nice.  I'm also the pround owner
 of a gray tiel, named Skye. She was also the "ugliest" one of the
 bunch!  I must admit I was initially more drawn to the other tiels
 available for sale, I mean afterall they were exceptionally nice
 looking compared to Skye.  Yet, Skye possessed something very special
 about her - perhaps it was her utter insistence that I pay attention to
 her and not the others!!! She was so persistent in gaining my

 together .   I have two Cockatiels (Petey and Rikki) , an Orange headed
 Conure (Ralphie), a Brown-throat Conure (Peachie Girl) and a Timneh
 African Grey (Tobie). They all have very different pesonalities . I
 love them all dearly .

We have owned an African Grey for about 5 months and she is absolutely

Your page with the words Tomi say is gret.  Our Congo African Grey loves
 it.  He listens intently!  Aren't our pets great.!  Dusty loves to rock
 in my arms at night and then he crawls in our bed each night and sleeps
 on his belly all night. He is paper trained so I never have to worry, I
 know he will wake me up.  He wakes me in the morning with a big Kiss
 sound.  Then he watches until my eyes are opened before he makes
 another sound. This is much better than an alarm clock.  Keep adding to

My whole family loves your parrot noises and dance!  We are now the new
 proud owners of an African Grey, as yet unnamed because he doesn't come

I loved your webpage and listening to Tomi's "repertoire" of phrases.
 Those mystery phrases stumped me though.  I am owned by 3 German
 Shepherds and 9 birds.  One of my best birdy buddies is my 8 yr. old
 female CAG named Smokey (aka S.K.)  Some of Tomi's mystery phrases
 reminded me so much of S.K.  She's a great talker, but sometimes she'll
 have these conversations with herself that leave me clueless as to what
 she's trying to say.  Only she understands what's been said.

I love your story about how you got Pii-chan. I started out with keets
 all my life, and decided to go one size up and get a tiel. The first
 pair I got are breeding now, and producing many babies. I also got
 another pair, but they are too young for that now. I want an african
 grey next, they are so cool, I've been doing research on them so I know

I've recently acquired a Timneh African Grey - around 2 years of age.
 His name is "Goober" and I'm just crazy about him.    He is a big
 whistler and I'm teaching him to whistle "Dixie".  He wasn't talking at
 all when I got him, so I'm hoping we can work together.  He has started
 to say "pretty bird", but not in my voice.

Well I just wanted to say I was just visiting.  I found your page to be
 most entertaining learning of your african gray.  We just got one and
 he is keeping our hands full.  Like tommy he has had a few homes and
 humans before us.  We want to let him know that we are his last humans.
 He is going to grow old with us but I think he is getting ready to be
 taken somewhere else.  He even started feather pulling in the bird shop
 we found him at.  He has since had good days and bad.  Sometimes he

About the little yellow bird named George. I had a little bird named
 George, everywhere I went he went too. When I got home from work he
 would greet me. He loved to talk, he would say boo boo come here, hello
 Greg, hi Joe Joe, and sing to me, he groomed my hair and gave me
 kisses. He was my best friend, my little yellow buddy. The angels came
 to take him to heaven. He will be missed that little yellow bird. I
 write this for George, he will never be forgotten.

My husband and I adopted our first cockatiel in Feburary 1998, he is 7
 years old  .  Our baby is Milo, and she is almost 2.  We thought she
 was a female at first,   because babies look like females.  They live
 in a cage together and are the   best of friends.  They enjoy spending
 as much time as possible out of the cage,   sunbathing, and taking a
 bath.  We are currently trying to make a decision   between an African
 Grey or a Cockatoo.  I'll keep you updated.

Have a Congo Grey named Gunner.  Got him when he was a baby. The 1st yr.
 he was my bird then not sure what happen he would only want my husband
 for the 2nd yr. now its like he doesn't like either of us.  His cage is
 open most of the time so he can play on top.  Seems to stay on his cage
 til we have company, then he come's out to see who there and wants them
 to pick him up.  We think  his wings where clipped to short when he was
 a chick as they have not grown back and they brother him and he blames

Hi! I am a bird love for a long time. I have 21 parrots and I love them
 all. 1 green-wing macaws, 1 yellow-naped amazon, 2 finschs conures, 2
 love-birds and 15 cockatiels. They give me joy everday. I have a house
 up state NY and I take some of babys with me. we go on picnick with
 them too. In the summer, I do lot with my babys. I belong to a Long
 Island Parrot Society (LIPS) and I love it. They have great seakers
 there. Love from Barbara & all my babys too.

As I am into my eightth month of ownership of two cockatiels (one being
 lutino and the other gray) Iam considering a Timneh parrot for a pet

I just bought 2 congo greys and 1 timneh. I also have 2 quakers. When I
 go up to the greys my female quaker tells them "its okay" "mama won't
 hurt". It is a riot. My male congo looks at her like are you crazy.

Hi, I love your website.  Tomi is so cool!  I wish
 I had an African Grey!  I have a cat named Lily...she is weird, just as
 weird as Tomi.  She sleeps in pillow cases, eats popcorn and golfish
 crackers, must sleep by an  open window, and she likes to watch
 Anamaniacs but hates Teletubbies.  She hides under the couch when it's
 on.  Her eyes sort-of change colour too.  She is the cuddliest cat and
 still runs around in circles after a ball of string even though she's
 5, she has the same b. day as my brother, age 9

I keep a white female cockatiel my self and am fond of birds

I have an African grey named Milo.  I,ve had him for approx. 8 months
 and hand fed him for the first couple months. He has two feline friends
 named chloe and Smokey, and a pooch named duke (he,s an old doberman).
 They all get along very well. I got Milo and Chloe around the same time
 and they seemed to have formed a mutual respect towards eachother,(
 that would probably explain the blood trail leading away from the bird
 cage). If u have any tips about teaching the bird vocabulary, I would
 be all ears.

i just read the story about pea-chan  i loved it. i dont know why some
 people  think that birds would not make a good pet.  i was raised
 around dogs&cats but think  birds make great pets

I have a 6 month old normal grey named"Paco". I got him when he was 8
 weeks old and finished his weaning. I had a female cockatiel "Rosebud"
 for 14 years and she died 2 weeks before I decided I couldn't live
 without a cockatiel. Paco is a beautiful yellow-headed male who amazes
 us all with his antics and his ability to talk and sing songs taught to
 him by the entire family. We love him so.

I have a cockatiel about 11months old she says pretty bird and whistles
 this old man. and the fox whisle. I am trying to teach her more. I

Great story about little pea-chan.  My guy also chose me and has been
 one of the loves of my life ever since.  I too was not a bird person
 until out of desperation for the lack of a pet broke down and went to a
 bird shop.  The rest, as they say, is history.  Elvis is my guy, and he

I live in South Africa, and wondered if you have any one else from SA
 who writes in to you.  We lost our African Grey on Sunday 13/3.  He was
 in the garden on his cage and when we came out he had gone.  His wings
 had been clipped, but I've since heard from experts that they can malt
 in a short period and their wings grow again and they are able to fly.

I have 2 parrots-an Umbrella Cockatoo and a Blue Fronted Amazon.  They
 are both perfect  birds.  They never scream at day-break, never throw
 their food out of the cage  and never do a few other things that I

Hi, I'm from the Island of Puerto Rico this morning I was reading and
 searching   information regarding the tiels. Then I found your page. I
 lost a baby tiel this   week, He was a cute loving lutino but he get
 sick and I went to the vet but a bacteria  kill him. He was 4 weeks
 with me, I miss that bodie. But I went were I bought my bird   and they
 give me another one but this one is different and like yours he ask me
 3 times   if I want to change for another one. Lets see!!!!!!

I have an african grey and they are s smart and mine is very spoiled

 we have one gray parrot, a couple of sinamons and two love birds.

I also have a African Grey Parrot that I had ever since he was a chick.
 His name is Frikkie.  He's about 2 years old now.  He once fell out the
 fifth floor of our flats' window.  Luckily he survived, but had a
 broken leg that had to be fixed with 2 pins.  He's quit allright now,
 and talks a lot of nonsense.  Nice to look at your web site!!!

Hi, my name's Marcus, I just turned 14, and I'm a lover of all birds and
 fish. But my favourite animeal overall is the cockatiel. I reckon that
 they are the best pets  that anyone could have, oh they are so cute and
 cuddly...  Anyway, my favourite video game is "The Legend of Zelda
 Ocarina of Time" (Action), my favourite movie is "Wronfully Accused"
 (Comedy), and my favourite thing to do is, NOTHING!!! That's right! I'm
 a very lazy person, and a lover of cockatiels. (Oh, and I forgot to
 mention that I'm a boy).

I have a 14 week African Gray. I purchased her from a breeder when she
 was 7 weeks old so we are very bonded.  She has actually said a few
 words already!  She says, "go to school"!  I love to read about Grays
 and everyone's experience with them.  I am a Ph.D who never is too busy
 for her bird!!

Your story of how Peachan found you was wonderful - very touching and
 sweet.  I have a cockatiel named Cocoa Puff - my 4th cockatiel.
 Cockatiels are such characters - alot like 3-year olds.  They (contrary
 to alot of peoples opinion)  are the most entertaining, lovable, sweet,
 intelligient and sensitive pets I've owned.  A funny footnote: When
 Cocoa gets bored or tired of hanging with me he will fly to his cage
 and pull the cage door behind him - it is a scream. Enjoy your birds -
 they have great spirit.

I have a seven year old cockatiel! He whistles and says my name and a
 few french words. But the nastiest words are in english... if I'm not
 up by sunrise Max tell's me to f... off.  ttfn

I personally do not have a pet. However, I did buy a Cocatoo for my Son
 and his family. Really the brid is my Dauhgter-in-law's, but the whole
 family loves her.  I have been giving some thought to getting a
 Africian Gray. The pet store prices have prevented me from getting one,
 and I am hoping I can find a bird at a better price elsewhere. Possibly
 directly from a breeder?

Hi...just dropping a line to let you know that my sister who has a
 severe macaw and a cockatoo, just acquired an african gray from someone
 we know that could not keep him. His name is Charlie!  These are my

This is a really cute page.  I got my Timneh (RUDY) in July, 2000 and he
 is so fun...I am so glad I chose a Timneh.  He is only six months old
 and on occasion says HELLO....of course not when any one is around,
 only me.  The big, yeah right, he says hello.....Oh well, I love him

I have an african gray cockatiel and a parakeet.  The cockatiel is named
 keiki (baby in Hawaiian) and the parakeet is tweety bird.  Every time I
 sit down keiki thinks I have to spend hours petting him.  Loves his
 head scratched and lets me pet him like you would pet a cat.  He is
 about 4 mos. old
